We want to support the fight against HIV/AIDS and give it new momentum. So we founded the initiative dotHIV e.V and applied for the Top-Level Domain ".hiv" - the first ever domain-ending dedicated solely to serving a social cause. It will generate funds by selling the domains in order to support the cause all over the world, raise awareness of HIV/AIDS and work against the stigmatization of people living with the virus. The .hiv extension will become the Red Ribbon of the digital age.

The Story

We want to support the fight against HIV/AIDS and give it new momentum. So we founded the initiative dotHIV e.V and applied for the Top-Level Domain ".hiv" - the first ever domain-ending dedicated solely to serving a social cause. It will generate funds by selling the domains in order to support the cause all over the world, raise awareness of HIV/AIDS and work against the stigmatization of people living with the virus. The .hiv extension will become the Red Ribbon of the digital age.

From 2013 on, every click on a .hiv site will trigger a micro-donation and everyone can wear the digital Red Ribbon as a symbol of solidarity with the fight against the virus. We are turning a Top-Level Domain into a communication tool and giving everyone who is engaged in the AIDS response a common, global space within the web. We used Facebook and YouTube to create and build a community and Twitter, Wordpress and Jovoto to expand it. But in the end, we are using the largest digital platform there is – the Domain Name System itself, one of the cornerstones of the internet.

The Technology

The Results

The .hiv TLD can make a major contribution to achieving the end of AIDS. It uses the power of the internet in a creative and never-before-seen way and unites the globe in the fight against the virus. Nearly 3,000 .hiv websites have already been pre-registered, many organizations that are engaged in the AIDS response have expressed their willingness for cooperation and some global brands have assured their support. We expect to pass on more than five million US dollars of donations to projects and initiatives all over the world within the first three years of domain sales.
