To introduce its new brand of Miru contact lenses to the European market, Menicon wanted to create an interactive film that let people see the world in a new way. The result? A visually interactive experience called "To See" (Miru, in Japanese), featuring breathtaking helicopter shots of the rolling Portuguese landscape underlined by a touching narrative. Thanks to a custom flying camera rig that captures 720-degree video, viewers can pan the vistas not just left and right, but up and down as well.

The Story

To introduce its new brand of Miru contact lenses to the European market, Menicon wanted to create an interactive film that let people see the world in a new way. The result? A visually interactive experience called "To See" (Miru, in Japanese), featuring breathtaking helicopter shots of the rolling Portuguese landscape underlined by a touching narrative. Thanks to a custom flying camera rig that captures 720-degree video, viewers can pan the vistas not just left and right, but up and down as well.

We designed and built an aluminum mounting rig that allowed Sony NEX7 compact cameras to shoot 360 degrees, both vertically and horizontally, with no blind spots; we call this “720 degree interactivity.” Stinkdigital’s motion and dev team used panoramic stitching software to merge imagery from the six cameras and create a seamless, spherical video. We devised a way to integrate PTGui with After Effects using UV maps and also used Cinema 4D to model balloons in the film and work with the panoramic images.

The Results

The final experience allows users to immerse themselves and explore a beautifully visualized narrative. As well as the desktop experience, the film is also available as a mobile app utilizing the device's accelerometer to add a 'window onto another world' element to the interactivity. The project was picked up by 'Creativity Online' for it's innovative use of filming and post production techniques.
