"Philips: You Need to Hear This" is part video game and part interactive music video. It was made with the Swiss Lips band to promote Philips' CitiScape headphones. The goal was to create an immersive storytelling universe, where every single user interaction affects the music and the driving track. Visitors get behind the wheel of a Corvette as Sam (the band's lead singer) and their mission is to track down a "pimped" van that belongs to the gang that's kidnapped Carolyn, Sam's girlfriend.

We wanted to create an interactive music video with the aesthetic of an 80s racing game—in 3D. The choice to do this in 3D helped define the technology we used. We chose Unity for its powerful 3D and physics engine and Adobe Flash for its ubiquity and advanced sound API. Unity contributed to the game elements while Flash handled UI and network communication. While there is some overlap between the two platforms, we believe the combinations allows us to advantage of what they do best.

The Results

Mae West once said: "When I'm good, I'm very good, but when I'm bad, I'm better." The same is true for this campaign. Players can make good decisions like rescue the girl, save the pixelated world and listen to all pretty sounds. And they can choose to do something entirely different—something against their nature. They can hit road barriers, destroy petrol stations and get killed by zombies. This music video game is all about freedom of choice, which can lead to something extraordinary and exciting.
