How do you make finance fun? Every year PNC calculates the cost of each gift in "The Twelve Days of Christmas" to compile a playful financial report called the "Christmas Price Index." This year, to celebrate its 30th anniversary, PNC created Gift Maker, an online workshop where users build custom versions of each of the 12 toys, learn their prices and enter for a chance to win their own 3D-printed creations.

The Story

How do you make finance fun? Every year PNC calculates the cost of each gift in "The Twelve Days of Christmas" to compile a playful financial report called the "Christmas Price Index." This year, to celebrate its 30th anniversary, PNC created Gift Maker, an online workshop where users build custom versions of each of the 12 toys, learn their prices and enter for a chance to win their own 3D-printed creations.

We started with concepts for each of the 12 toys, then created 3D models of them and their component parts. These models were used in both the digital experience and 3D printing process. The digital experience was designed around the toys and built in HTML5 to ensure that it worked on a variety of devices. Each day for 12 days, 24 toys were printed on-demand by more than 20 3D printers, primarily MakerBots.

The Results

Early indications show overwhelmingly positive results. Users submitted more than 1,000 gift designs every day and spent more than six minutes on the site per visit. More than 20% of site visits were from repeat visitors.
