We partnered with Respond and Rebuild, a small group that was on the ground in the Rockaways in the immediate aftermath of Hurricane Sandy. We were able to build a donation platform that allowed people to easily send money to areas with the greatest need. Moreover, we used video to show where the money was going and how it was being used, giving donors a more personal connection to their relief efforts.

The Story

We partnered with Respond and Rebuild, a small group that was on the ground in the Rockaways in the immediate aftermath of Hurricane Sandy. We were able to build a donation platform that allowed people to easily send money to areas with the greatest need. Moreover, we used video to show where the money was going and how it was being used, giving donors a more personal connection to their relief efforts.

Using HTML5 and CSS, we built and animated an entire world ready to be refilled with homes. The sheer amount of land and assets was the biggest hurdle to overcome. This layered construction also ensured that we could include new maps for new areas affected by disaster very easily, only needing to create new maps and house files and drop them into the system. Stripe and its credit card processing API were also essential for ensuring a smooth ecommerce system without building one from scratch.

The Results

Several months after Hurricane Sandy, we were able to raise awareness entirely through earned media that there was still work to be done and still people who needed help. Moreover, we built a platform using familiar game mechanics that can be easily and cheaply reused in any disaster to provide effective and direct relief.
