Since the dawn of the internet, music makers have been trying to create music remotely. Unfortunately, none of them have succeeded as the internet doesn't provide a low-latency data exchange mechanism that can be used over global distances. Our goal was to make remote music collaboration finally feasible for music makers and to build awareness around it. The result? Soundation Studio in Google+ Hangouts, a new way to make music via social collaboration.

The Story

Since the dawn of the internet, music makers have been trying to create music remotely. Unfortunately, none of them have succeeded as the internet doesn't provide a low-latency data exchange mechanism that can be used over global distances. Our goal was to make remote music collaboration finally feasible for music makers and to build awareness around it. The result? Soundation Studio in Google+ Hangouts, a new way to make music via social collaboration.

The first step was to embed recording app Soundation into Google+ Hangouts. This technology now allows music makers to collaborate remotely in a way that resembles Google Docs (one track at a time). We organized a successful remix competition featuring Daria Musk called #DariaRemix for first seeding purposes. The app has recently seen a massive push, creating a totally new and unique experience for thousands of Hangouts users.
