The Dali Staring Contest was created to celebrate the spirit of two avant-garde artists-Andy Warhol and Salvador Dalií-and promote the opening of the "Warhol: Art. Fame. Mortality" exhibit at The Dalií Museum in Florida. Given both artists' preoccupation with the notion of celebrity, we thought it would be interesting to capitalize on the spirit of that obsession in the app. We sought to create a surreal experience that captures the attention (figuratively and literally) of the public. Simply put: It's a staring contest. Oh, and Dalií always wins, a gleeful reminder of his rather large ego.

The Story

The core technology behind the app is OpenCV and a custom eye-tracking algorithm that determines whether users blink. From the get-go, we wanted people to focus on Dalí's intense eyes, so we looked at camera-tracking technologies and recent advancements in the computational power of mobile phones. With the ability to run the algorithm in real time, we began to expand the interaction and design, bringing the app to life.

The Results

The Dalí Museum and its exhibits are bound to their physical space in St. Petersburg, Florida, but the museum’s audience is the global art community. To let the museum communicate and play with its fans around the globe, we found the sweet spot where technology, creativity and digital engagement intersect. In addition, information about upcoming exhibits is seamlessly incorporated in the user's app experience.
