Yariv Adan, Product Lead for Google Assistant, took to the stage at Think 2018 to explain how natural language and artificial intelligence are combining to create the digital interface of the future.
The arrival of the internet heralded the beginning of the digital age, but it wasn’t until the web went mobile that it became truly ubiquitous. A user base of hundreds of millions grew to become billions, empowered by more powerful devices, scalable platforms and a simpler user interface.
Now, a new technological revolution is set to increase levels of engagement even further, in a paradigm shift to natural user interfaces (UI) based on voice interaction. Using everyday natural language to get things done is the simplest UI of all, allowing us to engage with machines in the same way we engage with each other. In every previous model of human/computer interaction, we’ve had to adapt and learn in order to communicate with machines, but in this next phase the machines will have finally learned to adapt to us.

With natural UI in place, devices will effectively disappear. The same voice interface will be able to help you whether you’re in the office, in your car or at home. Just as the ubiquity and portability of mobile increased digital engagement, the simple interface provided by intelligent assistants will lead to an even greater surge in activity.
Making the most of the opportunity presented by this technology requires access to a broad platform.
