We saw a substantial number of tweeters were grieving over burnt popcorn, so Pop Secret went to work solving this problem with technology. We developed an app specifically designed for Pop Secret that would listen for when popcorn was cooked and alert just before being burned. Developing the Perfect Pop app was an opportunity to interact with our customers on a broad level and through a pervasive medium: their smartphones.

Everyone can relate to the frustration of burning popcorn, so we decided to solve the problem once and for all. Our biggest challenge was adapting the listening technology to all flavors and types of Pop Secret and making sure all microwaves with different wattages were compatible. Our engineers developed a first-of-its-kind approach to listening technology that was capable of analyzing the sounds of popping kernels in dozens of microwave models. Perfect Pop is designed exclusively for Pop Secret; it turns out, each brand of popcorn has its own unique "popping acoustics."

The Results

Perfect Pop was downloaded more than 110,000 times in the first month alone, with more than 223,305 downloads to date. It appeared in outlets like TIME, Yahoo!, NPR Marketplace, and Popular Science, totaling 91,042,370 earned and paid media impressions, valued at $654,286. Perfect Pop was featured in the App Store as #2 Top Free iPhone Food & Drink App (right under Starbucks), What‚s Hot — Food & Drink, New and Noteworthy — Food & Drink, and Top 10 Free iPhone Food & Drink Apps.
