UrbanDaddy challenged us to create a memorable interactive experience in water. Our desire was to create animations that party-goers could swim through. Initially we had no idea how to make this a reality. In researching a solution, we had to overcome the fact that projection doesn‚t work on the surface of water and pool parties are notorious for more standing than swimming. Our solution had to be fun and practical. So we threw 65,000 ping pong balls into the pool, enough to cover the entire surface. To go with our ping pong screen, we created reactive graphics that lit up as people swam.

The Story

UrbanDaddy challenged us to create a memorable interactive experience in water. Our desire was to create animations that party-goers could swim through. Initially we had no idea how to make this a reality. In researching a solution, we had to overcome the fact that projection doesn‚t work on the surface of water and pool parties are notorious for more standing than swimming. Our solution had to be fun and practical. So we threw 65,000 ping pong balls into the pool, enough to cover the entire surface. To go with our ping pong screen, we created reactive graphics that lit up as people swam.

The ability to project on any surface, allows us to interact with people in any situation "_ even a swimming pool. We wrote the interactive application, which ran all of the animations in Cinder, a C++ framework. In addition, we wrote applications for mobile devices that allowed us to trigger graphics on the fly, in direct timing to what was happening in the pool.

The Results

Fun is hard to define and maybe an overlooked measure of success. But there are so many decisions in projects that can sacrifice the overall fun of the piece. We were told that people at parties at night don't swim. So our goal was to make something that was so much fun that they overcame that social phenomenon. Not only did people forget themselves, they jumped in fully dressed. We gave people an unforgettable night, which is why the video of it has had so much success online. It's impossible to fake that kind of fun.
