3 industry leaders sum up 2020 in one word
December 2020If asked to describe 2020 in one word, many of us might instinctively respond with something not safe for work. Still, OMD Global Chief Strategy Officer Chrissie Hanson, Creative Theory Co-Founder and CEO Tamon George, and BBDO LA Producer Storm Smith were up for the challenge. See how they summed up a most challenging year in this video.
How would you sum up 2020 in one word?
Tamon: [laughs]
Chrissie: In one word?
Storm: [gives a little laugh]
Tamon: Well, my
first thought is s***show, but obviously I can’t say that.
Chrissie [gives a look of incredulity]
Storm: One word is “change.”
Tamon: The word that I would choose would be “courage.”
Chrissie: “Testing.”
Storm: And why did I pick the word “change”?
Honestly, the world and the people, including myself, we're not the same
in the last few months and not even from a year ago.
Our voices now are becoming more heard and louder, and the accountability is higher.
Chrissie: Testing of yourself, of your resilience,
of the pressure that you put on one another, and then showing up and delivering upon your promises.
Tamon: When you think
about businesses, both big and small, there was courageous steps that people had to take
on all fronts, sacrificing work, laying people off, making really, really difficult
decisions. I think it took a lot of courage from a lot of people to do what was right
for the health and safety of us as a society, but then also to do what's right by your family.
Storm: Oftentimes the stories with
people with disability, in terms of representation and inclusiveness, it comes from the lens of
fully abled and non-disabled people who are writing the stories about us. And it's time
for us to reclaim our own stories and, and convey that in advertising and television and media and
technology and in various industries, because the world is continuing to evolve as we know it.
Chrissie: This has been a year that has tested
organizations, that has tested processes, that has tested your individual level of grit.
And it has been tough and it will continue to be tough.
Tamon: It was a year that
took a lot of courage from, really, everybody to band together and do what needed to be done.
